Did you know that when the weather changes our skin changes too? You might notice this the most in winter when your skin gets dry from the heating in our homes and the wind outside, but it also happens in other seasons as well. As we start seeing April showers and May flowers, our skin needs a few tweaks to make sure it’s ready for spring and summer.
Put your best face forward!
- Exfoliate and start anew: Spring is a great time to start working on your exfoliation routine to freshen up your skin for the spring and get all of that dead, dry skin off your face! You can make your own gentle exfoliate at home with some brown sugar and olive oil or even gently rub your skin with a damp washcloth during or after cleansing to help your skin look fresh and clear.
- Lighten the moisturizer: In the winter, we often pile on heavy moisturizers and lotions to help our skin stay moist. Now’s the time to lighten up! Go for a lighter moisturizer that is thin lotion or gel instead of thick lotions and “butters.” Hydrating your skin is still essential, so don’t skip this step, but make sure that your skin isn’t get too oily from thick moisturizer.
- Slather the sunscreen: Some of us are better at remembering to wear sunscreen than others, but now is the time to start wearing it. We’re supposed to wear it year-round, but now’s the time if you only start wearing it when the sun peeks out. Make sure you are using a non-chemical sunscreen to prevent toxins from entering your skin and stave off breakouts.
- Drink even more water: Hydration is always important, but when the weather is warmer and the sun shines harder, we tend to be outside and active more often. Hydrating with lots of water not only helps keep our organs working normally, but also helps our skin look and feel healthier and younger. Try to carry a refillable water bottle with you at all times to remind you to drink up!
- Be careful with tanning: Basking in the sunlight is one of the great joys of summer. However, we need to be very careful about our skin’s exposure to sunlight. Always wear sunblock when you are outside (even for just a while), wear a hat and sunglasses to protect the delicate skin on your face, and seek shade when possible. Also, sunless tanning is a tempting alternative, but many sunless tanning lotions and oils contain harmful chemicals and toxins that can really damage your skin.
