We all need a boost of comedic relief every once in a while! While we have so many options for comedy at our fingers (hello, Netflix!), I challenge you to pick up a book, read, and laugh. I saw Mindy Kaling’s gorgeous cover of her newest book Why Not Me? and I had to read it. Kaling was one of the stars and writers of the show The Office, and she writes and stars in her own show The Mindy Project, which is in its fourth season. I was intrigued by the title as it is a positive question we often ask ourselves when we feel challenged by our dreams and goals.
Not only did I crack up laughing so many times as I read her book, but I also learned a lot about ambition, work habits, and life in Hollywood.
This book is actually a collection of essays on a variety of topics. She touches on everything from how to achieve the Hollywood look and her ambitions, work habits, romantic escapades, worries, and fears. Kaling readily admits that her former main goal in life is making people like her, but she is learning and changing. Her new outlook is to “feel entitled,” to tell herself that she deserves good things and will work hard to achieve her goals. Many women find themselves in the same position–wanting to be liked but also wanting to achieve their dreams–so I appreciated Kaling’s recounting of her life experiences that increased her confidence and helped her focus on her passion. Throughout the laughs, this point keeps shining through as she powers through her long work days and disappointments. As readers, we can relate to Kaling in many ways, and her sense of humor through some of her most challenging moments was inspiring and enlightening.

Of course, this book is also hilarious. Her essays are so funny, and she writes like she is talking to you as a friend. She makes such witty observations and is often self-deprecating and clever. I laughed out loud several times and smiled the whole time I was reading this. She’s incredibly smart, funny, silly, awkward, and confident all at the same time, just like many of us!
I definitely recommend this book if you love to laugh or even if you’re feeling like you need a little boost of confidence and inspiration to push your career and your work-life to the next level. She also has an earlier book called Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) which is also hilarious and enlightening.
